Blog Assignment #2-THE GUITAR HERO DEBATE

Click here to open the link to the article.

Read this short article about the musical connection between the guitar and piano and the popular video game "Guitar Hero."

Determine whether or not you agree with the author. Defend your position using complete sentences. Posts should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs. Do not forget to post your name, and to leave these posts as anonymous comments below.

In my personal experience, for the record, I AM TERRIBLE AT GUITAR HERO! That is why I found this article interesting. I have played the guitar for 21 years, and the second I tried this game, I was a total mess.

However, the author pleads that being a musician helped him to be a better guitar hero player. I agree that it builds coordination, which is a plus, but with regards to fretting notes, it couldn't be less accurate, as the frets are replaced with colored buttons!
Anyways, we will discuss in class, but please post your thoughts, and read your fellow classmates posts!

If you cannot get this up on the blog, email your response by 10:00 pm Friday 9-20 for full credit.

  1. I do not agree with the author, I only played guitar hero a few times, but after a while I got better. When I played guitar hero I was able to play pretty well but when I play an actual guitar it is not as easy.

On a real guitar you have to not only move up and down the neck, but you also have to move between strings, play 2 or more strings at a time, and play a lot closer to the body than in guitar hero.

  2. I agree with the author that if you are musical you would be able to do the movements easier and hear and understand the structure of the song better. However I don't agree that if you are a musician the game would be easy for you because it could just be a hard and confusing game.
From my own experience I was never able to get past the begginers levels because I couldn't watch the screen and move my finger at the same time and I could not move my fingers fast at all. I am the same way with the guitar, I have to look at my left hand to see where to move my fingers and I can't play at a fast tempo.

I agree with the author and I disagree with the author as well. First I will talk about how I agree with the author. I can relate to this because I have played the game in the past and I found it pretty easy. I think it is the way I have gotten used to the motion in my fingers. It has made it easier to move them at a faster rate then someone who is just starting.

What I disagree about the author is that he anticipated the notes ahead of time and had an advantage. I don't believe that it takes much practice to be able to learn a song and realize what comes next. Also there are multiple strings on a regular guitar and that is not similar to buttons. Sorry I just mostly disagree with the article.

I agree that it helps build coordination but I don't think that it's helps that when you're already playing an instrument it'd be much easier to play guitar hero. I played the piano in the past and then started playing Guitar Hero and it took a little bit to get used to, and the author had said they played the piano and said they played it much easier and quicker than their friend did. I completely disagree with the article.

I think that It could help for some people if they have played an instrument in the past but not for everyone. IT could help you with coordination but for the rest it is just a game and different than an instrument. I played piano for like five or six years and I don't think that it really made a difference. Even though I'm not too bad at guitar hero.

I think that it helps beginner get some coordination down but overall it does not seem like it would help you with the real thing. When i used to take guitar lessons I was not to bad but I was horrible at guitar hero. That is why I disagree with the article.

  8. I do not agree with the author because there are no strings or real frets. I would say that the only reason he was good at it is because he had good hand coordination. It would help to increase hand coordination but again has nothing else really to do with guitar. It has no cords, frets, and you don't tune it. All it is, is a piece of plastic with colored buttons on it.
I agree with you Mr. Morrow. The game is very fun but aside from increasing coordination does not help you learn guitar. If a person wants to learn guitar just take a class instead of buying a $60 game. Also if you don't own the system than you will have to purchase it. It costs like 100 or 200 bucks so take a class.

I agree that games that require left and right hand independence, such as Guitar Hero would help with teaching each of your hands do it's own thing. I also think that it helps to improve your sense of rhythm in a way because in the game you usually you "strum" to the beat instead of when you would actually strum with a guitar. I can see why being a pianist would help with Guitar Hero, which is the point of view the article is written from, because you become used to moving your fingers over keys which are similar to the plastic guitars. I don't think that it would help real guitarists, it might just confuse and anger them. I do however think that it could help drummers because Guitar Hero actually has a "drum set" that's similar to actual drums. This is just a theory however, I don't know how actual drummers feel about Guitar Heros drums...
I do disagree with how being a musician gives you more of a clue to when the notes are going to be played. Honestly anyone could do that if they really liked the song enough.

I do not agree with the author. I do not think being a musician and playing guitar hero really correspond with each other. Just because the author was a musician and was good at the game doesn't mean everyone is like him. I think being a musician is much harder than being good at a game. To be a good musician you have to build up your skill set for a long period of time and for guitar hero I think that anyone could learn it pretty quickly.

So the author says that Guitar Hero is supposed to make you a better musician. I completely disagree with his statement. Sure it gives you better coordination between your two hands but it still doesn't teach you how to read music or fretting or even play the song! Something I would always say to someone when they play guitar hero is "Great! You got 100% on the guitar on expert, Nice Job.....now play it on a real guitar." When ever I say that, their face goes blank and they just don't know what to do. That's because they didn't learn anything from the game.

The only thing the game teaches is coordination. It doesn't teach anything about where to put your fingers on an actual guitar or what each fret stands for. Also, a guitar has different strings. that's 6 places to put your finger in just one fret. If you're playing guitar hero, it doesn't matter where you put you finger, just as long as you press the right button. It's as if the guitar is one string and if you hit the general location of the note, then you're correct. If guitar was as easy as just pushing colored buttons, everyone could play the guitar.

I have played Guitar Hero and am pretty good at it. I am not a musician and have never touched an instrument until this class. I do agree with the author that playing Guitar Hero can help with hand coordination but playing Guitar Hero is nothing like playing a real guitar. Even the feel of the strings and the way you place your fingers and hands are different.

I don't agree with the author's claim that playing Guitar Hero can help you be a better musician. It doesn't teach you about fretting or reading notes. I wouldn't be able to play a song on a regular guitar that I have mastered on Guitar Hero. The only way I have mastered a song is by practicing and repetition until I have gotten it right which I guess is a good habit to get into when practicing on a regular guitar. You can't become good at something without practicing.

  13. I don't really agree that guitar hero can really help your skills with a real instrument. An instrument is much harder to coordinate. like a guitar for example, it has 6 strings, each having many frets and notes. As with guitar hero there is 5 buttons I think, making it so much easier. I don't even think it can help with coordination really because its only 5 buttons. so no I do not agree with the author.

  15. i dont agree with the author because guitar hero is different to play real instrument. and u need to get good habit by playing real guitar which mean if u use real guitar then its better to find the right fret easily.

  16. I generally agree with the author; it is easier to get rhythm on guitar hero if you have played a real instrument. Its controls are not exactly like those on a regular guitar, so if you are good at guitar, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be good at guitar hero. It would be interesting to see if a video gamer could learn guitar faster.
